Things to do around the Camp
Kerr Lake
One of the largest lakes on the Piedmont, Kerr Lake covers approximately 50,000 acres and has a shoreline of 850 miles in North Carolina and Virginia. The man-made lake was created in 1953 when the Roanoke River was dammed to assist in flood control and to provide hydroelectric power. Another result was the creation of one of the largest, most popular outdoor recreation areas in the state. Kerr Lake State Recreation Area consists of 9 separate rec areas spread out over 3,000 acres of land. Facilities at the rec areas include developed campgrounds, picnic areas, and boat ramps. The lake sees heavy recreational use, with boating and bass fishing the most popular activities. The lake is large enough that it rarely seems crowded. Several of the rec areas are open year-round, others closed during the winter months.
